by Chama C. Fox - Sep 27, 2004 Like beautiful but terrible devils from a twisted nightmare they came, roaring out of hyperspace in sleek and deadly ships. Their might was overwhelming, and humanity's chances of winning the war was decreasing with every day of bitter, relentless defeat. Arrogance and pride were their hallmarks, accentuated by a feral beauty, so striking that it could bring tears to the eyes and desperate longing to the hearts of the most callous men. The Cats were like death gods, sweeping their scythes of distorted time-space across the unworthy swarms of man-built ships, destroying them as effortlessly as if they were just playing with mice. Earth was scourged by religious fever. The doomsday sects were queuing up to declare the end of the world, all wanting to go out in glory. Quite a few did more damage in their suicide attacks than the Cats ever did to the planet. New York, Moscow and Rome were all devastated by nuclear explosions caused by zealots who in their wild passions wanted to include their fellow men in their own personal redemption. A perversion of an old Mayan death cult sprang up seemingly from nowhere, demanding and performing human sacrifice to the Jaguar gods arisen from the underworld to rule in the sky. It was a dark moment for Earth. Yet we were cunning and crafty, and despite the horrors of the past war, we concocted a secret weapon. Unbeknownst to all, when the situation seemed most desperate, we launched it, in a final attack of all or nothing. One moment, the fleet of deadly ships was there, hunting down Earth's once proud war ships. Then, without warning, the lethal feline force was gone, erased from the sky forever. So total was the terrible power of our weapon that not one single ship remained. The streets are lined with cheering people. Parades and festivities are competing for street space. The President of Earth just declared our triumphant return a global holiday and several religions have declared us saints, holy men and basically enlightened beyond belief. This is the moment of Earth's glory, and we are their saviors. It was such a simple thing, really. Once we fully understood their strange and chaotic ways, the path was clear. We could not possibly win by sheer force. A victory can never be complete if you lack an enemy to be victorious over. No, this way is much more interesting. They wanted drama, heroes and miraculous rescue, and this we gave them. We took over their defense datanet, blocked their long range scanners, and just boarded the remaining human ships. After scanning and disposing of the presumed heroes, we returned to Earth, disguised by relief, joy and simple body projectors. After all, these people so desperately wanted to believe that the secret weapon worked… that it did. Tonight, I will be with my "husband". I'm sure he will find it a whole new experience. |
